Save the Carabaos: A National Treasure in Danger

Dear animal friends and planet defenders,

Every week, hundreds of carabaos, these majestic water buffaloes of the Philippines, are sent to the slaughterhouses of Manila to be turned into corned beef. Yet, the carabao (Bubalus bubalis), designated as anational, is much more than a food resource. For centuries, it has been the backbone of agriculture, particularly for rice farming, and a symbol of the resilience of rural communities.

Since 2001, thePalawan Animal Welfare Foundation, Inc.has been fighting to enforce laws protecting this iconic animal. Despite our efforts, slaughtering is intensifying, threatening not only the carabaos, but also the livelihoods of farmers who depend on them.

Our Solution: An Innovative Rescue Program

We are launching a bold program to save 1,000 carabaos and preserve their role in sustainable agriculture. Our initial goal is to raise3,500,000 pesos (60,000 €)to purchase these animals and entrust them to local farmers. Here is our plan:

  1. Initial fundraising: Raise1,000,000 pesos (17,000 €)to launch the project.
  2. Message to farmers: "Do not sell your carabaos to slaughterhouses! We buy them and you keep them." We acquire the bare ownership of the animals, while farmers retain 100% of their production (rice, vegetables, fruits, etc.).
  3. Support for pregnant females: Farmers will receive1,500 pesos per monthfor 2 months before and 4 months after birth, ensuring maternal rest and nursing. The calves can be adopted by the farmer or entrusted to another farmer in need at the age of 2 years.
  4. Official registration: The carabaos will be registered by local treasurers, in accordance with Presidential Decree 533 of 1975.
  5. Transfer of ownership: Each animal will be purchased, marked, and transferred in the name of thePalawan Animal Welfare Foundation, Inc..
  6. Local supervision: A responsible farmer will supervise the carabaos within a radius of 25 km, ensuring their well-being, births, and management of natural deaths.

Benefits for the Planet

  • Sustainable agriculture: Carabaos replace polluting tractors, reducing CO2 emissions.
  • Soil protection: Unlike industrial machinery, carabaos preserve soil fertility.
  • Support for communities: Farmers maintain their livelihoods while protecting a cultural heritage.
